Yalnızca Kıbrıs adasının Girne Dağları’nda yetişen endemik bitkimiz Delphinium caseyi, Uluslararası Doğa Koruma Birliği (IUCN) tarafından Akdeniz adalarındaki en çok tehditle karşı karşıya olan 50 bitki türünden bir tanesi olarak sınıflandırılmaktadır.
Kıbrıs Yaban Hayat Araştırma Enstitüsü, TürkBankası’nın sponsorluğuyla, Çevre Koruma Dairesi ve BRTK işbirliği içerisinde endemik bitkimiz Delphinium caseyi’nin insanların olumsuz etkisi ve keçilerin otlaması gibi dış fakörlerden korunması için çalışmalarına bu yıl da devam etmektedir. Endemik bitkimiz olan Delphinium caseyi’nin karşı karşıya kaldığı tehditler sınırlı olan popülasyonlarının devamlılığını daha hassas hale getirmektedir.
Bu yıl, St. Hilarion bölgesinde Delphinium caseyi bitkimizin içerisinde bulunduğu alanın korunması için çit inşaatını başarılı bir şekilde tamamlanmıştır. Ayrıca, bitkinin tohumları yerli habitatlara yeniden tanıtılmasını kolaylaştırmak amacıyla Kıbrıs Tohum Bankası’nda güvence altına alınmıştır. Geçen yıl, Kıbrıs Tohum Bankası toplam 2332 Delphinium caseyi tohumunun korunmasına vesile olmuştu.
